Sophrology, Mindfulness, and the Wisdom of Cassie, Xena, and Phoebie

When a Dog and Two Cats Became My Guides

There are beings who, without saying a word, teach us what truly matters. For me, those masters on four paws are Cassie, Xena, and Phoebie: two cats and a dog, each with their own unique way of teaching me sophrology and mindfulness. Not through theories, but through their simple presence, their calm, and their resilience.

Here’s how Xena, my childhood dog, and my two cats, Cassie and Phoebie, introduced me to the art of breathing, being present, and living in harmony.

Sophrology: The Art of Listening to Body and Heart

A Discipline Between East and West

Sophrology, created by Alfonso Caycedo, blends conscious breathing (inspired by yoga), relaxation (borrowed from hypnosis), and positive visualization (rooted in Buddhism). Its goal? To rebalance body and mind and restore serenity.

But it was Xena, my red-furred dog, who first taught me how to practice it without even realizing it.

Xena: My Nighttime Guardian and Teacher of Resilience

Xena wasn’t just a dog. She was my protector, my guide during sleepless nights and moments of doubt. When I was a child and ventured into the forest at night, she followed me, watchful, never taking her eyes off me. She taught me grounding long before I knew the word.

What She Taught Me:

  • Rhythmic breathing: When I was afraid, I would place my hand on her side and match my breath to hers—slow and steady. Without knowing it, I was already practicing coherent breathing (5 seconds inhale, 5 seconds exhale), a key sophrology technique.
  • Reassuring presence: Xena never left my side, even in moments of sadness or anger. She stayed there, calm, like an anchor. Today, when I feel overwhelmed, I close my eyes and imagine her beside me. I breathe in time with her, counting as I did back then, and instantly feel more centered.

An Exercise Inspired by Xena:

  1. Sit down and place a hand over your heart.
  2. Inhale deeply for 5 counts, as if feeling Xena’s breath against you.
  3. Exhale slowly for 5 counts, imagining her warmth and strength.
  4. Repeat 3 times, telling yourself: "I am safe, just as I was with Xena."

Xena showed me that sophrology is first and foremost about trust—in yourself and in life.

Mindfulness: The Art of Being Here and Now

A Practice of Simplicity

Mindfulness is the art of being fully present, without judgment. You don’t need to meditate for hours—just observe, as our animals do.

Cassie: My Meditation Teacher

Cassie, my tortoiseshell cat, is an expert in letting go. She can spend hours watching a sunbeam, perfectly still, as if time doesn’t exist. With her, I learned that meditation is simply being there.

My Routine with Cassie:

  • In the morning, I sit beside her and watch her breathe. I sync my breath with hers, focusing on the rise and fall of her belly.
  • When my mind wanders, I gently return to her presence, like an anchor.

A Simple Exercise: Choose a moment in your day (while drinking tea, looking out the window) and do as Cassie does:

  • Observe without analyzing.
  • Breathe without forcing.
  • Just be there.

Phoebie: Curiosity as Meditation

. Everything fascinated her—a cardboard box, a moving leaf, an unfamiliar sound. From her, I learned that mindfulness is also about marveling at the little things.

Her Legacy: When I feel stressed, I pick up an object (a stone, a leaf, a cup) and examine it as if for the first time, with the same curiosity Phoebie had when discovering a new toy.

Exercise:

  1. Hold an object in your hands.
  2. Observe its colors, shapes, and textures.
  3. Breathe while focusing solely on it, just as Phoebie would.

How They Transformed My Life

1. Sophrology Became Natural

Thanks to Xena, sophrology is no longer an exercise—it’s a way of being:

  • In the morning, I breathe as she did, deeply and calmly.
  • In the evening, I visualize her presence to fall asleep peacefully.

2. Mindfulness Became Playful

With Cassie and Phoebie, I learned that meditating is as simple as watching a cat nap or listening to the birds:

  • While walking, I feel the ground beneath my feet, just as Xena placed her paws with confidence.
  • While eating, I savor each bite, as Cassie delicately licked her bowl.
  • While listening, I focus on the sounds around me, as Phoebie perked up at the slightest noise.

3. A Lighter Life

They taught me that wisdom lies in the present moment:

  • I stress less because I know how to return to my breath.
  • I enjoy more because I’ve learned to find beauty in the details.
  • I live better because I no longer fight my emotions—I welcome them, just as they welcomed mine.

An Exercise to Try (Inspired by Them)

To reconnect with the present moment:

  1. Sit beside your pet (or imagine Xena, Cassie, or Phoebie).
  2. Observe them: how they breathe, how they simply are.
  3. Sync your breath with theirs (or imagine it).
  4. Tell yourself: "I am here. I am calm. I am alive."

(This exercise combines sophrology’s breathing with mindfulness’s gentle observation.)

What I’d Love to Share with You

  1. Sophrology and mindfulness aren’t complicated. They’re in everyday gestures, like a caress, a glance, or a shared breath.
  2. . They already live in the moment—let them guide you.
  3. You don’t need to control everything. Just be there, as Xena, Cassie, and Phoebie were for me.

And you? If you want to integrate these practices into your life, start small:

  • 5 minutes of breathing, inspired by your pet.
  • A moment of mindfulness, observing something simple (a flower, a cloud, your sleeping cat).

(. Let me know what resonates with you!) 💙
