Introduction
Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and light, does not always manifest in the form of a golden idol or a flickering lamp. Sometimes, she takes on the features of a tortoiseshell cat, whose fur captures the reflections of the sun like a daily offering. In this article, I wish to explore how my feline companion, Cassie, embodies some of the qualities of Lakshmi and how she helps me connect with this goddess.
The Story of Lakshmi and Cassie
The Divine Light
Like the lotus that emerges from the mud to bloom in the light, Cassie, with her golden stripes and peaceful gaze, seems to carry within her this same alchemy: transforming the ordinary into the sacred. When she stretches out in the morning rays, I see in her the 'Padma' of the Lakshmi Sahasranama—a presence that, without a word, reminds me that divine light is everywhere, even in the simplest gestures. Every time I see her lying in a sunbeam or gazing at the moon, I think of Lakshmi, who is often described as the splendor of Vishnu. Like Lakshmi, who is celebrated for her ability to transform darkness into light, Cassie, by her mere presence, dissolves my worries and brightens my days.
The Abundance of the Heart
Lakshmi also symbolizes prosperity in all its forms. Cassie, by offering me her presence, brings me emotional and spiritual wealth. She has taught me that true prosperity comes from love and connection with loved ones. Her purrs and moments of play remind me that abundance is not only material but also a fullness of the heart.
Life Lessons and Teachings
A Shared Ritual
One morning when I was feeling particularly anxious, Cassie came to rest on my knees as I recited a mantra to Lakshmi. Her light weight and purring reminded me that prosperity, according to Hindu teachings, begins with inner peace—a gift far more precious than gold.
Dharma and Grace
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us that 'yoga is skill in action' (2.50). Cassie embodies this wisdom: she acts without effort, without expectation, and yet every movement is a lesson in dharma. Lakshmi also embodies grace (anugraha) and dharma (the cosmic order). Cassie, by her nature, teaches me to accept things as they come, without forcing, like Lakshmi who 'descends' to Earth to bless those who are open to her presence. Cassie, through her patience (waiting for a bird on the balcony) or her generosity (not killing insects), inspires me to live in harmony with dharma.
A Personal Anecdote
One day, as I meditated on the teachings of Lakshmi, Cassie came to sit beside me. Her soothing presence helped me focus and find inner peace. It was as if she channeled the energy of Lakshmi, helping me connect with my inner self. These moments with Cassie are living reminders that Lakshmi does not reside only in temples or rituals but in the attention we pay to the present—this form of prosperity that nothing can buy.
Conclusion
Lakshmi and Cassie are my two guides: one, a goddess with lotus feet; the other, a cat with velvet paws. One teaches me the greatness of the divine, the other, its presence in the tiniest things. Together, they remind me that true wealth is not what we possess but what we see—and what we feel. This mantra, which I often whisper while petting Cassie, has become my prayer of gratitude for these little lights that illuminate my path.
Om Shrim Maha Lakshmyai Swaha.
Shanti Om.
